"I believe that appreciation is a holy thing -- that when we look for what's best in a person we happen to be with at the moment, we're doing what God does all the time. So in loving and appreciating our neighbor, we're participating in something sacred."
Fred Rogers
Young fans of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood know that beneath all his sweater vests and sensible ties, Fred Rogers offered his young viewers bits of insight to make them better people. In that iconic, soothing voice, he taught us about being a good friend and helping others and, evidently, appreciating those around us.
I choose to share this quote today because appreciation is a sentiment that can have an incredible impact on those who receive it, yet it is one that sometimes gets neglected. That said, I'll take a moment to express my appreciation for some of the people in my life:
As Mr. Rogers predicted, I do feel a bit like I've just done something sacred. What a great way to start the week.
I choose to share this quote today because appreciation is a sentiment that can have an incredible impact on those who receive it, yet it is one that sometimes gets neglected. That said, I'll take a moment to express my appreciation for some of the people in my life:
- My family (enough said)
- Those friends of mine whose friendship I never have and never will have to question.
- My sisters, for allowing me to grow alongside you all
- The underclassmen at Elon who may or may not know how much they inspire me on a regular basis. They start natural hair clubs, they chronicle their journeys toward their goals, and they live their lives more fearlessly than I could have at that stage of my life. Their unapologetic greatness is much appreciated.
As Mr. Rogers predicted, I do feel a bit like I've just done something sacred. What a great way to start the week.
Give those around you a dose of that sacred appreciation today.
